For the record, I don't think 2016 was such a bad year. Not for me personally. It was, rather, a harbinger of very bad years to come. . .

What the hell? Here's a meme. . .

1.) What did you do in 2016 that you'd never done before?
I faced down an Adjudicator at the Landlord Tenant Board and forced him to make a decision.

2.) Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
No and yes.

3.) Did someone close to you give birth?
No one I know has ever given birth while I was in the vicinity.

4.) Did anyone close to you die?
No.

5.) What countries did you visit?
The country of the blind, the October Country. They were no countries for an old man. . .

6.) What would you like to have in 2017 that you lacked in 2016?
Money.

7.) What date from 2016 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
September twenty fucking eighth because that was the date of the Hearing at the Landlord Tennant Board.

8.) What was your biggest achievement(s) of the year?
Temporarily preventing an Above Guideline Rent increase for myself and the people in my building.

9.) What was your biggest failure(s)?
I don't like to boast about my failures.

10.) Did you suffer illness or injury?
My stomach, neck and spinal column remain in a constant state of steady decay. Nothing exacerbated this decay, but nothing slowed or halted it either.

11.) What was the best thing you bought?
I bought a really good sandwich at the local Shwarma joint.

12.) Whose behaviour merited celebration?
The Austrians.

13.) Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Ye Gods. My landlords, and US voters.

14.) Where did most of your money go?
Rent.

15.) What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Seeing "In My Kingdom Cold" performed live.
Turning back the Fascist hordes from the gates of Moscow, to the strains of Shostakovich's "That Unforgetable Year, 1905"

16.) What song(s) will always remind you of 2016?
Probably "Murder in the Skies" by Gary Moore, though cover by Panzer was also memorable in its own way.

17.) Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder?
The World's only superpower, and first modern Democracy voted a misogynistic, racist, climate denying, big business worshiping anti-vax reality tv host into office, and you're asking me if I'm happy?

ii. thinner or fatter?
Thinner

iii. richer or poorer?
Status Quo

18.) What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing and playing guitar.

19.) What do you wish you'd done less of?
Video games.

20.) How did you spend Christmas?
Playing video games - losing Moscow to the Fascist hordes.

21.) How will you spend New Year's?
With old and, hopefully, new friends.

22.) Did you fall in love in 2016?
Probably.

23.) Old friends you've seen?
Most of my friends are old.

24.) What was your favourite TV program?
Really? ;)

25.) Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Hatred is too strong a word. I am deeply disappointed in and disillusioned with the majority of the Western World for giving in to their baser instincts, but I don't hate anyone in particular.

26.) What was the best book you read?
"Everything Flows" by Vassily Grossman. How does evil happen? How is evil allowed to flourish? Can human dignity and freedom survive it? Grossman knows. . .

27.) What was your greatest musical discovery?
Windir - ambient black Metal.
how about "rediscover"? In which case, Neil Young, definitely.

28.) What did you want and get?
For Christmas? Or in life? I wanted financial security, and sort of got it. . .for now. I got an mp3 player and lots of gas coupons as well.

29.) What did you want and not get?
Artistic fulfillment.

30.) Favourite film of this year?
I didn't watch a whole lot of films. I'd say Star Wars, but that was last year. "The Witch" was quite a masterful depiction of Puritan terrors.

31.) What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
It was a regular work day I think, so I ended up playing Slade records and eating cake.

32.) What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A Bernie Sanders election victory.

3.) How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2016?
Decent exposure.

34.) What kept you sane?
Music and literature.

35.) Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Bernie Sanders.

36.) What political issue stirred you the most?
The collapse of Democracy in Turkey, and the Rise of intolerance all over the Western world.

37.) Whom do you miss?
There are some folks I used to see more often. . .

38.) Who was the best new person you met?
I don't play favourites.

39.) Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2016:
Take nothing for granted, take opportunities on offer.

40.) Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"Now you've gotten older, and the world's gotten colder than it used to be..."

Writers block.

Am attempting a measured response to the ghastliness of Quebec city, but finding my thoughts impossible to measure.

Odd how indifference to death seems to bother me more than death itself. . .
